When I started learning about mattress, I had some trouble understand the differences and why the big huge price difference between the mattresses. So one day I sat down and looked at the contents of a cut off mattress like in this picture:

But what does it actually mean? I found out it was easier to understand
when I put burgers into perspective rather than a mattress itself. Let me
explain it to you how:

Can you tell the difference easier now? But you may ask then why are certain mattress costs around RM300 while some could go up to RM10,000 or more?

Let’s look at it from another perspective:

McDonald’s Beef Burger or Chicken Burger only costs approximately RM5 each. But why do people still go for Quarter Pounders and Mega Macs? Technically, I could buy 4 Beef Burger and combine them together to make it into a Mega Mac, can’t I? It would be cheaper than to buy a Mega Mac ala carte. But the flavour would be totally different won’t it?

Comparing This Two Mattress. Which would You Think is more comfortable?

Apply this to mattress: you could buy a cheap RM300 spring mattress and just add the different kind of toppers on top that you could get easily elsewhere. But it wouldn’t have the same affect you wish you would get. Reason being is the construction of the mattress and the thickness of the topper required for a perfect balance. You may be spending more but not getting the similar effect.

It is like the patty for a Beef Burger and a Big Mac is totally different. True they are both beef but the flavour is different aren’t they? It may not give you the kick that you are familiar with.

A burger is nice on its own but some people likes to customise their burgers like adding cheese, more pickles or more onions. They don’t mind paying a little extra cause they know it is going to be worth it. This is actually a fact to everything. Things are nicer with a little extra here and there. A pot of plant will look nicer with flowers on it, a living room would look more homely with a carpet in it.

As for mattress, the concept is the same. Most people find mattress is just a place to shut their eyes and rest but to some (usually older people) finds that a sleep is more than just a shut eye. It is a place for them to finally rest after spending almost 13 hours on their feet. So they don’t mind spending a few hundred or a few thousands more for quality sleep.

Like burgers, mattress is more expensive because of the quality of the base you (thickness of the patties or extra patties in burger terms). Then the garnish on top of the mattress such as memory foam, pin-hole latex, pillow-tops or even special gel based cooling system would increase the price of mattress as well.

I hope this answers the question of why are certain mattress so cheap and why certain mattress are more expensive. But in Malaysia, the concept and thinking is different. As I mentioned before people take a mattress as just a place to shut their eyes and rest for the next day’s challenge. But in the US, the mattress is a long time commitment like buying a car. I hope this blog can change Malaysian’s mind when they are purchasing a mattress.
